Circa 1850's
Early Photograph Flip & Mourning Brooch
Finding jewelry from the 1850's is extremely RARE.
Before the second Industrial Revolution only the
wealthiest could afford jewelry, likewise today rarely
does one come across jewelry before 1870's unless it is
displayed in a museum or is part of a family of great
means in the past. It was only during the second
Industrial Revolution that jewelry was finally made
affordable for the common man. This brooch is a fine
example of a rare item that was created for the rich and
famous of their day and prior to the mechanization of
the 2nd. Industrial Revolution.
This is a early photograph-Flip-Mourning Brooch,
I will explain what that means below...
Early Photograph,
Prior to this 1850 period, there was only three ways of
having one's portrait on a piece of jewelry. 1) An
actual miniature painting. 2) A cameo carving of
the likeness of that person. 3) A
daguerreotypes-picture. These two pictures are among
some of the earliest pictures created by early
photographers such as Mathew Brady and others as they
discovered this new artistic craft and skill.
Thus brooch is also a
Flip-Brooch, there are two pictures, that can be
"Flipped-over" so as to beautifully display either
of the two photograph's integrated into this brooch.
Mourning Brooch,
a brooch
or other jewelry worn after the death of a loved one.
It
was the custom to be in mourning for a period of two
years. During the first year only black was worn, in the
second year other darker colors were acceptable, to
include jewelry or gemstones of a darker colors. Having
a early photograph's inserted into this brooch in the
1850's was sign of wealth and statist that few could
equal in that day.
This Gold Filled Brooch, is 2-3/16 " long X
2-1/4" wide (65.25 X 18.50 m/m) and has a gross weight
of 48.9 grams. And is extremely rare find for such item,
not only for its circa but also that it contains some of
the earliest photographs following the period of
daguerreotypes of early photography.
Only $650.

"ONE OF A
KIND"
A extremely rare find, this is
one absolutely beautiful "Flower Pot Brooch",
not just for its design, but that it also contains four
major diamonds. My first thought was to "break
this item up" and make four engagement rings from
the diamonds, but that would almost be sinful to alter
this beautiful masterpiece. It was custom handmade by
Lambert Bros. of New York City, using old family
diamonds dating back to the 1890's to early 1900's, as told to me by its
former owner, and is numbered #H53558. Its constructed
from 14-K yellow gold. Please click on the picture for
an exact listing of all the diamonds. Most are high
grade VVS-1 grade diamonds.
If made new today, this diamond
brooch, with four major diamonds would be in excess $22,500.00
to reproduce such an item in today's market.
An exceptional
creation, at an exceptional low price
Only $19,450.

"Match Safe"
"Gutta-Percha"
[Gutta-Percha]
This "Match Safe" is a
rare and unusual collectors item, designed as a
safe way for a man to carry his matches. Created upon
the death of Queen Victoria, as a memorial tribute to
the Queen Mother. Both the top and bottom covers flip
open for access to ones matches. It appears that some
one in the past added a "ring' to one of the covers, so
as attach a chain to this "Match Safe"?. On the
right side is a "striking pad", used to strike and
light the match. It is 1-1/2" wide x 2.00" long x 1/2"
thick (38.77 x 51.11 x 13.86 m/m). Even though this is
not actually "Mourning Jewelry", it does fall in the
"Mourning Category" as a tribute to a loved or revered
one, upon their death. Though some "Match Safes" still exist,
finding one to the "Queen Mom" in memorial to Queen
Victoria, is extremely rare. And the only one
that I have ever seen.
